Chinese Junk Rig Sails There are a small, but enthusiastic and growing number of yachtsmen who choose this rig because of its many cruising advantages. Unlike most sailmakers, Chris Scanes has interested himself in this rig, and has created a niche market for Junk rig sails. This is in addition to the bulk of his sailmaking. Much research and development has taken place in cooperation with the Junk Rig Association. We are now beginning to understand how clever the Chinese were and how the rig can be applied to western hulls and perform very well, with none of the large loading strains put upon boats and crews that conventional rigs impose.
