From Lifeboat to Tote: A New Life for RNLI Rescue Kit

See how retired RNLI lifejackets and upcycled sails have been transformed into unique bags – handmade by us on the Devon coast.

Ever wondered what happens to lifesaving kit once it has finished its duty at sea? In this case, it begins an entirely new adventure.

For years, RNLI crews have relied on their kit in some of the most demanding conditions imaginable. Lifejackets worn during rescue missions and sails that once carried boats across open water have already seen their share of life at sea. Now, those same materials are beginning a new chapter.

We’re proud to share that we’ve been working with the RNLI to create the new Repurposed Collection, transforming decommissioned RNLI lifejackets and end-of-service sailcloth into durable, practical bags with a powerful story behind them.

Every bag has been carefully cut, assembled and stitched by hand. The collection includes two styles: the ALB tote, and the ILB tote, a larger version designed for when you need a bit more space.

RNLI Repurposed ALB Lifejacket Tote Bag, Yellow
This yellow and white tote bag is made from kit previously worn by all-weather lifeboat (ALB) crews at sea, combined with sails donated as part of our sail-recycling scheme. The straps, metal hardware, RNLI reflective logo, inner pocket and original kit labels all come from repurposed lifejackets, giving these durable, lifesaving materials a new lease of life.

RNLI Repurposed ILB Lifejacket Tote Bag, Red
The red and white ILB tote is made using kit previously worn by inshore lifeboat crews, paired with reclaimed sailcloth. This version is slightly larger than the ALB tote, making it ideal for grocery shopping, beach days or carrying everyday essentials.

For us, this project means a great deal. We live and work by the coast and the RNLI is part of the fabric of our communities – we’re incredibly proud to play a small role in giving their equipment a second life.

Most importantly, every bag helps support RNLI volunteers who are ready to launch to the rescue 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
